Unexpected Challenges

The Beach Shack is a unique beach house located above Portwrinkle Beach in South East Cornwall was partially built from materials salvaged from the Kodima cargo ship.

The two-bedroom house, which is used as a holiday rental, was in need of renovation.

On the first day at the site we discovered that serious external damage had been caused by Storm Éowyn. This required rearranging our work schedule to accommodate this remedial work. We undertook the replacement of the entire canopy at the front of the building with a bespoke green oak canopy and surround, plus a new lead roof, including the guttering and down pipes. The result provides the perfect sheltered spot to enjoy the incredible views across the sea.

Once this unexpected work was complete we returned to our original brief. We replaced the doors and windows – which were in a state of disrepair – with doors and windows using akoya wood using high quality 316 stainless steel handles and hinges – rust resistant so suitable for coastal areas. The entire interior was redecorated, giving a fresher look to the house.  As the original construction of the building was poor, we also replaced all the insulation, vapour control and cladding.

Other work included rewiring the property, installing air to air heating that doubles up as air conditioning, a new hot water cylinder, new external lighting and the power supply for a hot tub.

Our team of four was onsite during the project, which took approximately 6 weeks from start to finish. We worked in collaboration with Unique Projects who managed the landscaping element of the renovation.

Vision was in constant communication with the client throughout, including providing detailed breakdown of the storm damage for their insurance company.

The result is a new lease of life for the Beach Shack, both in terms of interior attractiveness and comfort, with the building fabric secured to ensure longevity.
