This attic space existed as a potential room but had over the years become a general storage space and dumping ground.
Our brief was to reimagine it as a multifunctional space that could provide accommodation for guests and provide discreet storage space – including bespoke displays for an impressive Lego collection. Additionally, the client was keen for the room to be able to be used as a gaming room for their son.
As this is an attic room, the project understandably presented tricky access challenges, which the team worked round effectively.
We installed underfloor heating to make better use of the available wall space including a sofa bed for guests. This is integrated with the smart home control system and heat pump. The result is a cosy, welcoming ambient temperature.
Our client had planning permission for a balcony. We selected the Velux Roof Terrace System as the perfect option; this allows one section to lift up and the other to open like a door, allowing access to the outside balcony area. Prior to creating the aperture for the Velux and balcony, consideration for the structural integrity of the roof was paramount, with structural engineer designs required to satisfy building control.
Within the room itself, a backlit display unit was set into the wall and bespoke cabinets designed to provide storage space, with a bright orange finish to give the room an exuberant ambiance. The rest of the interior finishing was carried out to a high standard in contemporary neutral tones.
This conversion is a superb example of how to use a smaller space efficiently using innovative solutions. The result is an attractive, practical space with the added benefit of access to incredible views over the Exe Estuary and beyond through the Velux balcony with its glazed balustrades and tiled platform. The newly installed windows allow light to flood into the previously dark and gloomy room.
The project, which Vision designed in-house, took less than three months to complete.
